The line manager & wellbeing

Date: 21 March 2024
Time: 11:00-12:00
Location: Online

New research suggests that for nearly 70% of us, our manager has more impact on our mental health than our doctor or a therapist – equal in fact to our partner. As businesses prioritise employee wellbeing more than ever, we explore the ways, good and bad, that managers affect the wellbeing of their teams.

We've teamed up with the Bank Workers Charity to identify those managerial behaviours that are most strongly associated with high levels of productivity as well as of wellbeing and we will show how managers are the most important factor in creating a wellbeing culture.

This webinar is free and open to all members.

Impact of language on mental health

Date: 12 March 2024
Time: 11:00-11:45
Location: Online

The power of words cannot be overstated. They’re so much more than symbols on a page, as they shape the way we think, and influence how we see the world. They affect our moods, and they can influence others too, for good and for bad. By framing our words in a positive light, we can help others to see opportunities instead of obstacles in the challenges they face. And for ourselves, positive and constructive language can be a catalyst for a healthier mindset, fostering resilience, and boosting our self-esteem.

In this webinar from the Bank Workers Charity they will explore the relationship between the words we employ and how we experience the world and provide some helpful tips on how we can use language in ways that support good mental health.

This is a free webinar and open to everyone.

Cancer in the workplace

1 in 2 of us will get a cancer diagnosis in our lifetime. Not surprising then, that employers are building support for employees with cancer into their wellbeing strategies.

But it's not just those who have cancer themselves that need support. It can impact those around you too. It's a unique journey for those going through it, and it can be a unsettling time not knowing what's coming next. Often those impacted might not know exactly what support they need, or what's out there. So, it's important that managers know what steps their organisation has taken to support those affected by cancer. It's also important too that organisations have flexibility built into their policies, and that managers have patience and compassion.

That's why we teamed up with the Bank Workers Charity to explore this subject in more detail and to explore the steps organisations have taken to support those affected by cancer.

One of our members shared their experience of the effect their partner's diagnosis had on their lives.

Overnight our conversations turned from planning holidays to planning appointments, scans and biopsy's. Then we turned to the domestics and thinking about what if the worst happens.

The emotional roller coaster is constant.

Work can be a good distraction and a crumb of normality. But it's harder for management to support me because I don't know what's happening next, or when the next appointment will be. I don't want to let my colleagues down either.

Managers need to listen and be patient. Remember that the colleague is navigating through a huge life change. Work with the colleague, and don't apply pressure or put your own expectations on them.
