Suicide is preventable
Content warning: This article contains mentions of suicide which may be triggering for some.
Every year on September 10th, the world comes together for World Suicide Prevention Day to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage actions to prevent suicide.
Suicide is preventable through intervention, education, and open conversation. In 2023, more than 6,069 people in England and Wales died by suicide—the highest rate since 1999. It's crucial to know that talking about suicide doesn't encourage it; instead, it opens the door to support.

- Ask the Question: Don't be afraid to ask if someone is thinking about suicide. It can open a conversation about getting support.
- Assess the Situation: If there’s no immediate danger, encourage them to speak with someone they trust or contact support services like the Samaritans (116 123).
- Listen Without Judgment: Simply listen and thank them for sharing their feelings.
- Express Empathy: You don’t have to fully understand, but showing you care can make a big difference.
- Encourage Professional Support: Suggest they reach out to professionals or use self-help strategies.
- Follow Up: Agree to check in with them regularly.
