8 March 2018: Happy International Women’s Day
Today is International Women’s Day (IWD) and Accord is celebrating the important contribution of the female workforce.
Almost 70% of our members are women so it’s an important day for us.
As well as celebrating their achievements, today is also a day to highlight the inequalities women continue to face in the workplace.
The TUC recently reported that women in the UK effectively work for free for more than two months a year because of the UK’s gender pay gap. And despite recent publicity, this is still an issue that employers have been slow to address.
Lloyds Banking Group recently reported its average gender pay gap (the difference between the average amount that men and women are paid) as 32.8%. Although this is better than the average for the financial services industry, the Group accepts that there is still more to do.
We’ll be working closely with the business to regularly review pay levels to ensure that men and women are paid equally for doing equivalent roles across the Group. And we’ll advise and support individual female members who think that they may be being underpaid for the work they do when compared to their male colleagues.
According to academic research, gender parity is still over 200 years away.
That’s why there’s never been a more important time to keep motivated and #PressForProgress – this year’s campaign theme.
