Clive was the kind of man that you would want on your side. I was lucky because he sat by my side during many Accord meetings with Regulated Sales Senior Managers and I witnessed at first hand just how passionate he was about getting a fair deal for all. He was also funny and mischevious, adding much needed light relief to some tense situations. I know we should be celebrating his life but I can’t help feeling very sad at this awful news. Miss you Clive x Lesley Brown

Sorry to hear of Clive’s passing. My memory will be of his great wisdom, wit and passion. Rest in Peace. Barry Grimes

Always had a chat and a joke at RGM. He always told you everything in a straightforward manner at meetings . A great person to have known, as a rep of over 20 years. Kerrison Griffiths

It was always a joy when Clive spoke up to speak at the RGMs.  He made you smile no matter how bad things were.  A huge loss. Victoria Bannerman

I was very sad to hear of your passing. I  will always remember the way you tirelessly worked for me and my colleagues when Halifax Treasury was relocating – you were amazing and we finally felt we had a friend who understood. Thank you and sleep peacefully. Alex Pavlovic

A very sad loss. I never actually met Clive but yes, I can clearly see that mischievous smile so many have mentioned! May he rest in peace. Caroline Belfitt

Clive always bounded into the office with energy, a smile and hello to everyone.  A man of the people and a shining star. Dawn France

It was my privilege and pleasure to share the union side of the table with Clive on so many occasions when I worked for Unite. I will always be grateful for his support and encouragement in all we tried to achieve, and so often it was enormous fun to watch him in action. One of a kind who will be sorely missed.  Gwyn Bates

I’ve known Clive since my first years with the Leeds when I joined the Leeds Staff Association.  He was a very knowledgeable man and a great teacher who guided me as the chairperson for the London area when I sat in on disciplinaries.  You will be remembered with fond and funny memories.  Gaynor Griffin

A remarkable man called Clive Webster touched the lives of many and every time he did, he made you feel you were the most important person in his life.  You don’t get to be as popular as he was by treating people badly and if you treated people badly, you got to know about Clive’s values! The supreme networker, respected and admired by all. Deepest condolences to June and family. Jim Fielding

I only met Clive on a few occasions but found him a very personable character. His inspirational reputation preceded him in the very best kind of way. The comments from those who knew him well only serve to highlight how much of a loss his passing has been. I imagine he will be remembered by all who knew or knew of him with affectionate reverence for his dedication to the cause. John Baxter

Clive was such a good bloke. His ‘Barnsley chop’ was unknown to tennis coaching manuals but impossible to return. Condlences to June and Family Mike Braithwaite

My message to Clive is simple.  Thanks for everything. Dave Stringer

Clive Webster was a solid trade unionist who believed in education & learning for all. If old fashioned (?), then I always felt that was just his personal taste in music! I worked and travelled with Clive for five years and well remember that cheeky smile and bright glint in his eyes. He hated injustice and unfairness of any kind. A comrade wedded to our trade union movement and a good man not looking to do any other type of work or to ever retire. When Clive “banged the table” to emphasise any point in negotiations not even I could fall asleep at our joint meetings! Our condolences please to his “Brownie”, (June) and all his Family . Steven & Liz Kennedy

Very sorry to hear that Clive has passed away. He was a true gentleman who I had the pleasure to meet and work with following the merger with the Leeds. My sympathies go to his family and colleagues at Accord HQ. Gordon Davies

I feel honoured to have met Clive. He personified what a trade unionist should be. After meeting Clive you would be left in no doubt of his passion and commitment to workers rights. A very sad loss. My heart goes out to his family. RIP Clive. Martin Lang

Clive was a terrific chap. I always left meetings with him so enthused with a passion for people and life. He cared about the important things. He also had a disarming way of ensuring he always had control of the biscuits. Gordon Edwards

Today we say goodbye to our friend.
He fought it bravely to the end.
He was a very popular chap.
And very seldom spouted crap.
We will all miss him very much.
So many of us he did touch.
He really was Ged’s right hand man.
“I’m not having it” just ran and ran.
I am quite sad I can’t be there.
There are so many friends who really care.
Goodbye dear Clive you’ve gone away.
But forgotten, never, ever no way. Keith Sartain

I had the pleasure and privilege to be part of the BOS team that negotiated alongside Clive and Accord at the inception of HBOS .  He was a firm negotiator and always had the members’ best interests at the forefront.  Can I take this opportunity to send my heartfelt condolences to his wife and family. Dennis Beck

Clive for many years chaired our annual advisory committee meetings and has left us with many great memories of a true gentleman, who cared passionately about the work he undertook on our behalf. Our meetings were always a joy to attend, never a chore or something that had to be done and that was due to Clive with his `down to earth` and `say it as it is` approach. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues. John Guyatt

Clive was one of a kind, an absolute gem.  Attending meetings with him was inspirational.  He was so intelligent, considerate, charming and passionate about his work.  He always had a witty anecdote to share and his enthusiasm was infectious. I was very fortunate to have worked with him.  He will be sadly missed but his memories will linger on.  My condolences to his family and friends. Christine Tucker

Very sad to hear the news of Clive’s passing – an outstanding union leader who cared passionately about Accord and its members.  He somehow enabled you to look forward to meetings with him even in the knowledge he was looking forward to challenging you! RIP Gefrin Price

So sad to hear of Clive’s death.  Clive always had a smile & kind word.  My thoughts are with his family. Val Fleetwood

I was so sorry to hear the news of Clive’s passing. I have known him for over 20 years when I became a rep for the Leeds Staff Assoc. and learnt alot about being a new rep from him.  Although not seeing him recently due to his illness he will be missed, especially his cheeky smile. Margaret Leason

It  was when the Leeds and Halifax unions were combining that I first met Clive. It was apparent from the outset that here was a man who like all true Trade Unionists put his members first. Being a northerner myself I admired his straight talking no nonsense approach. I worked with Clive for a short while and he brought a breath of fresh air to our combined union which he helped forge. Gone but never forgotten. My condolences to all his family. Rodney Grainger

Clive fought hard for all the members of Accord, always with wit, humour and a strong sense of fairness. Clive was a proud Yorkshire gent who will be greatly missed.  My thoughts are with Clive’s family. Hayley Bruce

I am still trying to find the right words to say.  Clive was one in a million and I will miss him dearly.  I’m always going to think ‘what would Clivey Baby say’ – which would probably be ‘It’s not F***ing good enough’ with a twinkle and a smile!  RIP Clive x Helen Field

So sad to hear the news. Clive was one of the good guys and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. Andy Collins

I knew Clive for nine years, on the ‘opposite side of the table ‘  in Halifax, HBOS and LBG.  I truly respected his fair mindedness and the calibre of his thinking.   I looked after financial markets, and rather than trying to apply  ‘one size fits all’ Clive truly grasped what modern unionism could be in offering support to everyone to ensure fairness and equality.  A life well lived. Alison Davies

I was truly devastated on learning of the death of Clive. To me he was “the” definition of what a true union leader should be.  We can only aspire to be as good as he was and keep the good work of the union going. My condolences to Clive’s family and friends. Andrew Gent

What can I say about Clive that hasn’t already been said.  Clive was very inspirational and helped and supported me throughout our working together during many negotiations and consultations.  I will miss his honesty and sense of mischief but will so miss his famous ‘Up with this we will not put’ – a statement that could give chills to the Employer but always made me a proud trade unionist and always always made me smile.  RIP Clive. Wendy Dunsmore

Very very sad to hear the news about Clive – even as someone theoretically on the opposite side of the table I found Clive to be someone that always acted with complete integrity and was passionate about getting the right result for colleagues – in addition to being as he might say “right good company”. He will be sorely missed and my thoughts are with his family. Iona Rodger

Simple words cannot express the sorrow that we all feel today! I will see you on Friday.
Love JBXX  PS Up the workers!!! Julian Bickerstaff

I feel very privileged to have worked with Clive.  He always brought a great sense of pride, passion and integrity during talks and ensured common sense and cheeky humour never left the room.  I will miss him dearly along with his one liners during consultation and his emails that always started with a jolly “Hello” no matter what the issue was!  My thoughts are with Clive’s family and friends.  Kelly Thomas

A simply great guy. I feel privileged to have known him in my work across the Community banks. He will be greatly missed by his family, by Accord, and by the business. A great loss to us all. Sue Higson

I had the privilege to work with Clive for over 16 years and he always strove to get the fairest deal for Accord members and his challenge was always with that end in sight.  Personally I will miss his very wise counsel that he was always willing to provide.  Deepest sympathies to his family. Jane Wayper

A truly exceptional gentleman.  I will not only remember him for his fantastic work but also his enigmatic smile and kind words. It was a privilege to have known him. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with both his family and those at Accord HO. Lorraine Gower

Such a sad sad loss. Clive and his cheeky smile (delivered at just the right moments!) will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.  A true gentleman of great integrity, he leaves a lasting legacy in everyone he inspired along his way. You will be sadly missed, rest in peace Clive. Emma Willis

I only had the privilege of meeting Clive a handful of times, but that was all that was needed to realise what an inspiring character he was for the whole time I knew him. My thoughts are with his loved ones. Will Baker

Not many people deserve the epitaph “one of a kind” but Clivey does. A good friend and colleague he will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched. Our thoughts are with June and the family. John Dickinson

So sorry to hear from Brian Simmons of Clive’s passing. We attended many meetings together during my time on the PEC. Clive always ensured that he knew what matters we each wanted to discuss at joint meetings with Group Employment Relations and he introduced them in logical order to help the smooth running of the meeting. He always had the right words to do this, making everyone take an interest in what could have been dismissed as a routine matter but was actually very important. Notably there was a slight omission in revised fire instructions that had been circulated to workplaces but Clive attracted the interest of the Premises executive manager and got the matter resolved very quickly. My condolences to his family, may Clive rest in peace. Dennis Garland

I’m shocked and saddened to have read that Clive has passed away. During my time with Accord I was lucky enough to meet him on several occasions and his commitment to the Trade Union movement was truly inspirational. A true gentleman, he always made time to listen to members and gave me a lot of support and advice during my time as an Accord rep. My thoughts are with his family, and his colleagues at Accord. He will be greatly missed. Alan Kennedy

I was so saddened to hear the news of Clive’s death. I had known him since late 1989 when I started work at LPBS in Nottingham. Clive paid a branch visit and left a lasting impression with me, so much so that I became a union rep shortly afterwards and remained one until October 2009 when I took early retirement. His knowledge of trade union law astounded me, not least his ability to quote at random any particular act that protected workers. He had a mischievous smile that was easy to warm to. He helped me on numerous occasions, not just me but other members of my family, non HBOS employees, who were experiencing problems in their own workplace. That was the Clive I knew. Kind, helpful and generous with his time. The world is a sadder place without him. Deepest sympathy to his family, friends and all colleagues in Accord. RIP Clive. Jean Durkin

Very sad to hear of Clive’s death.  Whilst technically we were on opposite sides of the table, it never felt like that when working with Clive.  He was passionate, pragmatic and the best  interests of staff were at the core of everything Clive said and did.  I was privileged to learn Employee Relations from the best teacher. Clive, I’m sure the Caribbean sunshine you loved so much is shining on you now. RIP. Alison Wheatly
